Driver crashes into Dinsmore church; sanctuary damaged

Church crash
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

A small church in northwest Jacksonville needs to rebuild its front wall after a car plowed right into its sanctuary Saturday night.

The runaway car crashed into the Victory Holiness Church near the intersection of Old Kinds Road and Trout River Boulevard.?An organ and several pews were also damaged.

A couple of pieces of plywood and some 2 by 4s were standing in for what was once a brick wall at the front of the church.

Pastor Tommy Jones said his church has a long way to go to get back to what it looked like before the weekend.?

"We've got a lot of debris and stuff, busted blocks and stuff, inside. It knocked the wall slab off its foundation there. So it's pretty much that whole back is going to have to be replaced," Jones said.

Jones doesn't know if anyone was seriously hurt, but he heard rescuers needed to cut an 81-year-old woman out of her car.

The church, with 25 members, doesn't have any Saturday or Sunday services. It's next service is planned for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Jones said he hoped to begin repairs immediately.
