Elsie McCabe Thompson, president of the Museum for African Art in Manhattan, is stepping down after 15 years of running the museum, reports The New York Times.
In the Friday announcement, Ms. McCabe said she is resigning ?to pursue other career opportunities.?
The museum has struggled financially for the past three years, delaying the opening of its new space, originally scheduled for 2009, because it needs an additional $10-million to finish construction. The museum said in a statement that it was ?in discussions with several funders to ensure that the project is completed successfully.? The museum has occupied several temporary homes since its founding in 1984.
Ms. Thompson, who has led the museum since 1997, said in the news release that she planned to join the museum?s Board of Trustees. Kenita Lloyd, deputy director and chief operating officer, will step in temporarily to oversee the museum while museum officials, including Ms. Thompson, search for a replacement.
