DUBAI, May 27 (Reuters) - Topaz Energy and Marine, a unit of Oman's Renaissance Services, has signed the first phase of a $330 million refinancing loan agreement with banks, its parent said in a statement to the bourse on Sunday.

The plan totals $203 million and was arranged and financed by Standard Chartered, DVB Bank and First Gulf Bank, the statement from Renaissance said.

The transaction is a seven-year shipping finance deal, secured against the company's vessels, a banking source familiar with the transaction said. The source, requesting anonymity, added talks were ongoing with three to four other parties about joining the facility.

"Stripping out the engineering unit into a separate company was a good move. The marine part has got healthy cashflows so we're comfortable backing it," the source said.

The plan will refinance Topaz's existing borrowings and releases $60 million in trapped equity.

Topaz operates mainly in the Middle East, North Africa and Caspian Sea region, running a fleet of 100 offshore support vessels.

A $57 million second phase is planned for later this year, according to a Chairman's Report on first-quarter results, and Vishal Goenka, Renaissance group's chief financial officer said that international and regional banks were interested.

United Arab Emirates - based Topaz appointed banks in November to lead the refinancing initiative.

It was hit by a $2.9 million fraud scandal last August, and prior to that, in March, forced to pull a London listing amid valuation concerns and regional unrest.

The company originally said it was seeking $380 million for refinancing, and expected the deal to close by the end of last year.

Its operating profit fell to 5.8 million rials ($15.06 million) in the first quarter, from 8.8 million rials in the prior-year period according to financial statements.

Golden Gate Bridge celebrates 75th birthday

Hundreds gather for parade to celebrate Memorial Day

Hundreds of patriotic local residents lined the downtown streets of Aiken to watch this year's Memorial Day parade make its way down Laurens Street.

American flags waved as far as the eye could see as families turned out to honor military members past and present. Even U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham yelled out, "This is the best parade in South Carolina" while he made his way down the route sitting atop a convertible.

Marching bands belted out the tunes of American lore as those in attendance clapped and saluted passersby.

"It was hot," said Jaibria Quattlebaum, who was in the parade as a part of the Aiken High School color guard.

"But it was fun," chimed in fellow color guard member Mariel Urizar, who was also sitting with Leanne Summers and Mercedes Winters at the ice cream social that followed the parade.

It wasn't just locals taking in the Memorial Day festivities either. Keri Truhe brought her family down from North Carolina to see her mother, Barb Rollins, in the parade on the AAA Home School Band float.

"Fabulous," Truhe said, sitting in the shade with her children Tori, David and Monica.

The parade was held by the James L. Hammons Marine Corps League Detachment 939 and featured more than 70 participating groups. The grand marshal was U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Perry M. Smith.

The Edmonton Oil Kings head coach is out of playoff mode, albeit a little sooner than he?d have liked, but he was in good spirits on Friday afternoon, finally able to take in the incredible run his team has had this season.

?You know what, we?re very proud of our kids. It was an outstanding season,? Laxdal said. The Oil Kings overachieved through the spring, surging through the Western Hockey League playoffs all the way to a Game 7, home-ice championship victory over the Portland Winterhawks. They punched a ticket to Shawinigan, Que. for the Memorial Cup, but ran out of gas at the national junior hockey championship tourney. Their 6-1 loss to the host Shawinigan Cataractes on Thursday night sent them home with a 1-3 record.

That?s the only losing record the Oil Kings were associated with this year. They went 67-22-3-4 this year in their run to the Memorial Cup, posted the best regular-season record in the WHL and won their first everything (playoff game, series, conference title and league championship) since re-joining the league in 2007. None of that was lost on Laxdal, who patrolled the executive flight centre at Edmonton?s International Airport, patting his players on their backs and making sure they were in good spirits.

?You go 67-22 and whatever it was. You ask me at the start of the season, ?Coach would you take that?? I?d say, ?Yeah, no problem,?? he said.

?You look at our organization three years ago, it was 16 wins going into 67 wins with playoffs and playing for the Memorial Cup, Western Hockey League champions, you know, what a season.?

On-ice skills aside, the Oil Kings greatest asset this season was their resiliency. Third period deficits were rarely insurmountable, highly-touted opponents didn?t intimidate and even after rolling through to the WHL final with one loss, a 2-1 Winterhawks series lead couldn?t break the Oil Kings.

?Our group has really matured in the last two years and you could see that, just the way we play and the way we carry ourselves and the way the players have developed,? Laxdal said.

?We?re going to be gone for 2 ? months now and when they come back we?ll go, ?Wow have they ever matured.? We saw it last year in our players, the Keegan Lowes, the Griffin Reinharts, the Mitch Morozes.

?We?re really looking forward to training camp in August and putting some new pieces into the puzzle. We know what it takes to win in the Western Hockey League, now we get to step back a bit and say ?What does it take to win a Memorial Cup?? and if you look at St. John, you look at London, you look at Shawinigan it?s three pretty good hockey clubs that were built for that tournament.?

While the coach wouldn?t take his eyes off of what was attainable during the team?s playoff run, he said on Friday afternoon that his team ? at an average age of 17 ? years ? was built to peak next season.

?Our goal at the start of the season was to get deep into the playoffs and winning the Western Hockey League, obviously you want to do that, but next year?s our year,? he said. ?We?ve got 20 of the 25 guys coming back and this year?s experience is only going to help us going into training camp, it will make it that much easier for these guys coming back. ?They?ve been there. Now there are no excuses for not being there (again), right? These kids coming back can take these experiences and move forward next year.?

A 17-year-old honor student was sentenced to 24-hours in jail and a $100 fine by a Montgomery County, Tx. judge for missing too many classes, CBS Atlanta reports.

Judge Lanny Moriarty told CBS Atlanta he wanted to make an example of?Diane Tran, saying ?If you let one run loose, what are you gonna? do with the rest of ?em??

Tran works two jobs in addition to taking advanced-level classes in an effort support herself and her younger sister after her parents split and left the teens to, basically, fend for themselves, she told CBS.

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The Vatican confirmed on Saturday that the pope's butler has been arrested in its embarrassing leaks scandal, adding a Hollywood twist to a sordid tale of power struggles, intrigue and corruption in the highest levels of Catholic Church governance.

Paolo Gabriele, a layman and member of the papal household, was arrested Wednesday after secret documents were found in his Vatican City apartment and was continuing to be held Saturday, Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said in a statement.

Gabriele is often seen by Pope Benedict XVI's side in public, riding in the front seat of his open-air jeep during Wednesday general audiences or shielding the pontiff from the rain. He has been the pope's personal butler since 2006, one of the few members of the small papal household that also includes the pontiff's private secretaries and four consecrated women who care for the papal apartment.

His arrest followed another stunning development at the Vatican this week, the ouster of the president of the Vatican bank, Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, by his board. Sources close to the investigation said he, too, was found to have leaked documents, though the official reason for his ouster was that he simply failed to do his job.

The "Vatileaks" scandal has seriously embarrassed the Vatican at a time during which it is trying to show the world financial community that it has turned a page and shed its reputation as a scandal plagued tax haven.

Vatican documents leaked to the press in recent months have undermined that effort, alleging corruption in Vatican finance as well as internal bickering over the Holy See's efforts to show more transparency in its financial operations. But perhaps most critically, the leaks have seemed aimed at one main goal: to discredit Pope Benedict XVI's No. 2, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican secretary of state.

The scandal took on even greater weight last week with the publication of "His Holiness," a book which reproduced confidential letters and memos to and from Benedict and his personal secretary. The Vatican called the book "criminal" and vowed to take legal action against the author, publisher, and whoever leaked the documents.

The Vatican had already warned of legal action against the author, Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi, after he broadcast letters in January from the former No. 2 Vatican administrator to the pope in which he begged not to be transferred for having exposed alleged corruption that cost the Holy See millions of euros in higher contract prices. The prelate, Monsignor Carlo Maria Vigano, is now the Vatican's U.S. ambassador.

Nuzzi, author of "Vatican SpA," a 2009 volume laying out shady dealings of the Vatican bank based on leaked documents, said he was approached by sources inside the Vatican with the trove of new documents, most of them of fairly recent vintage and many of them painting Bertone in a negative light.

Bertone, 77, had no diplomatic experience when, after Benedict's election, he took over the high-profile job as the main administrator of the Vatican and its external relations. He had long been Benedict's loyal deputy as a canon lawyer at the Vatican's orthodoxy office.

But he has been blamed for a series of gaffes that have plagued Benedict's papacy and, according to the leaked documents, generated a not inconsiderable amount of ill will directed at him from other Vatican officials.

"For some time and in various parts of the church, criticism even by the faithful has been growing about the lack of coordination and confusion that reign at its center," Cardinal Paolo Sardi, the former No. 2 official in the Vatican secretariat of state, wrote to the pope in 2009, according to the letter reproduced in "His Holiness."

At a news conference this week, Nuzzi defended the publication of the book and said he wasn't afraid of Vatican retaliation. In fact, he even taunted Vatican prosecutors to seek help from Italian magistrates to investigate the case, charging that it would be a remarkable turnaround, given that the Vatican has been less than helpful in the past when Italian prosecutors came asking for information for their investigations.

He praised his sources ? and said there were several ? in his acknowledgments, writing: "They risked their jobs, loves, lives to entrust their big and little secrets."

Nuzzi had no comment Saturday about the arrest.

Lombardi said Saturday the arrest of Gabriele was a sad development for all Vatican staff. "Everyone knows him in the Vatican, and there's certainly surprise and pain, and great affection for his beloved family," Lombardi said.

Lombardi said Gabriele had met with his two lawyers and that the Vatican judicial system was taking its investigative course. He hasn't been indicted.

The Vatican has taken the leaks very seriously, with Benedict appointing a commission of cardinals to investigate. Vatican gendarmes as well as prosecutors are also investigating the sources of the leaks.

Foster Care Month ? Modern Parent Online

May is National Foster Care Month. It is a time to pay tribute to the thousands of caring and compassionate adults who serve as foster parents, caregivers, social workers and volunteers, as well as the thousands of foster children who are cared for across our great country.

Protective Family Much unlike most children, I grew up knowing what foster care and adoption was as my grandparents had opened their home for many years to many foster children, so the topic was always discussed in one way or another. I grew up hearing stories of these children?s lives in my grandparents? home. I understood and accepted the love my grandparents had for these children and learned early on that above all, love was what was most important in a family. My Uncle Mike was a foster child who lived with my grandparents and my mom from the time he was 18 months old and until he died from Leukemia at the age of 15. He was their son and my Mom?s little brother and his death affected everyone in the family. I grew up knowing just how special he was and how much my grandparents cherished their son. Uncle Mike was family and it was apparent by the love he shared with everyone in the family.

Most of us have experienced a time in our lives when a series of events changed our lives and the direction of our lives were taking forever. This happened to me in my pre-mommy days back in 1989. I began working that year at Pius XII Youth & Family Services as an assistant caseworker in their foster care and adoption program. I had previously worked as an educational homemaker and helped at risk families learn pertinent life skills in order to prevent their children from being placed in the foster care system. While working on one of my cases, a colleague offered me a position with Pius XII. When I accepted that position, I never knew exactly how much that very moment would change the course of my life forever.

I loved everything about my job at Pius XII. Everything from my co-workers, the children, the families and the whole purpose of uniting families together, whether through adoption or the reunification of families who had once struggled but thrived. I worked year after year alongside caseworkers and learned a limitless amount of knowledge about the social service field and I loved every minute of it. It was a job that gave back, time and time again. I left Pius XII in early 1996, after the birth of my second child. It was a very difficult decision, but motherhood and the need to raise my two small children prevailed.

A few months later, I received a call from one of the caseworkers from Pius XII, inquiring if my husband and I would consider being foster parents for two teenage children that were in need of a stable home. The agency had discussed our home and believed that my husband and I would be wonderful candidates to care for these teenage children. Without hesitation, we said yes and our world changed forever.

A few days later, Pito and Jackie arrived at our home and we were ready to open our hearts and our home and become a family offering them the stability they yearned for. Becoming foster parents meant opening our lives to children to provide them with a safe, secure, and nurturing home. It was a wonderful and life-changing experience for us as the parents and for the children alike. In our home, we served as parents, counselors, healers, friends, mentors, role models, teachers and disciplinarians to the children. What greater reward could there be than to give new life to a child, especially to a child who has been hurt or damaged by adult mistakes. To help a child learn to trust and love again is quite a reward in itself. Foster parents have the privilege of giving a child his/her life back. I had the privilege and reward of knowing that by my own life, another?s would be better!

My role as a foster mother has taught me a lot about the world and about how families work. It has shown me that some definitions of family are very different from my own. I now appreciate how very lucky I am to have my own family in my life. I've learned to love unconditionally those who need it, no matter where they come from or how long they stay with us. It's devastating to see that child hurt again and again, and be unable to do anything to stop it. Love isn't always enough to cure every child. I really wish it was, but it isn't. Not only do you have to offer the love and encouragement, but the child has to be willing to accept it. Feeling powerless is an emotion that seems to stay over your head like a dark rain cloud, and you never know when the skies are going to burst into sudden downpours. I had learned along the way that the most important part of being a foster mom was to show consistency, love, compassion and most of all understanding.

Over the years, we provided care for several foster children, mostly on a temporary basis. Jackie only stayed in our home for about a year until she graduated high school and began college. Pito lived with us for over 5 years and throughout those years the bond between our family and Pito grew stronger and stronger with each passing day. He is our forever son and my children adore their older brother. It's incredible how much you can come to love a child who isn't even yours. It is sometimes hard to believe that it has been 16 years since he came into our lives. He was a petite, scared, and confused, 13-year-old and I am sure neither of us realized how much that day would change all of our lives forever. We couldn?t be more proud of him.

Pito has grown into an amazing young man and has eloquently overcome many obstacles along the way. It makes my heart sing every time he calls me just to thank me for all that we have done for him and for always standing by his side. I wouldn?t have had it any other way. He always tells me that he wouldn?t be who he is today if it weren?t for our family and the love we extended to him throughout the years. We are blessed to have him as our son and with those blessings; he has unknowingly changed our lives, FOREVER. Pito currently lives in New York City and is employed as a drug and alcohol counselor. Pito and his fianc?e are expecting the birth of their first baby in a few short days. As he begins his new journey, I am confident that he will be a wonderful father to his baby girl.

Report: 7-inch Google tablet coming in July

Last December, Google chairman Eric Schmidt told an Italian publication that the company would ship an Android-powered tablet "of the highest quality" within the next six months. Now a report suggests that a 7-inch tablet, co-developed by Google and Asus, will be hitting shelves in July.

The report comes from DigiTimes ??a tech industry?site known for vaguely sourced reports which don't always pan out ? so we're taking things with a hefty serving of salt, of course.

But where there's smoke, there's often fire?? and there are certainly several signs pointing to a summer release for the mysterious Google tablet.?NPD DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim previously told CNET that this mobile device was in the works and that a production run was "slated for April" (which would put a shipping date into the early summer).

There aren't many details about the tablet though. Shim suggested that it "will have a 1280x800 resolution 7-inch display," previous reports explained that it will be priced?between $149 and $249.?

That's about all we know for now. Well, that and the fact that whatever happens, the Google tablet will have an uphill battle trying to?win customers away from the top-selling?iPad, and the current Android leader, Amazon's?Kindle Fire.
