The stories keep piling up, at an alarming rate.

And reading the individual tales of heartbreak adds to the collective sense of dread at what?s coming next.

Former Chargers and 49ers linebacker Steve Hendrickson is suffering from a host of cognitive problems that he relates directly to his football career.

?I can remember material I had before the concussions,? Hendrickson told Howard Yune of NapaNews.com. ?Twenty years ago seems so clear to me, but yesterday seems just ?- far away, foggy.?

That short-term memory loss is among a host of problems for the 45-year-old Hendrickson, who hasn?t been able to work for six years, and was divorced a year ago.

He was mostly a special teams player in the NFL, and earned a reputation for toughness at an early age. But playing through a separated shoulder in a high school game is one thing. Playing through more serious injuries may have put him in his current position.

Hendrickson estimated he sustained at least 20 concussions while playing football at Cal and in seven years in the NFL. But he said there were never many questions along the way.

?They never even questioned you, and I never questioned it,? he said. ?They?d tell me how I got [the concussions] but never said it was some bad thing or that I should sit out. And when you cover kickoffs like I did, you?ll get a few, especially with the helmets they had then.?

Hendrickson, whose career ended in 1995, said his problems began in his 30s, when his memory began to fail and he?d go through ?these states where I?d be comatose two or three days, unable to move.?

While the Social Security Administration accepted his disability claim in 2007 citing trauma-related brain damage, he?s been frustrated by the NFL?s pension plan, which designated him disabled by ?non-football causes.?

Asked if his football career was worth it, Hendrickson said: ?Living the life, it wasn?t a great life. You?re a piece of meat, there one day and gone the next. And it might cost you your brain.?

So far, he?s not among the thousands of former players joining concussion-related lawsuits. But there are enough tales like his, not all of them on a court docket, to realize this is a looming storm for the NFL.

Spain promises to attack Italy in Euro 2012 final

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) -Spain will play attacking football against Italy in the European Championship final. The defending champions just hope Italy returns the favor.

Both teams go into Sunday's final at the Olympic Stadium promising to maintain the tactics that have brought them here. Spain coach Vicente del Bosque promised an attacking lineup comprised of three forwards, which did little to clear up whether Spain will use its midfield-heavy attack or field a single striker.

He also brushed off criticism that Spain's attack lacks the cutting edge it had during the team's Euro 2008 and 2010 World Cup triumphs.

"We have more of an obligation to attack than to defend because we have players with capabilities to do so," Del Bosque said on Saturday. "Football moves forward and there has been a change of players in the team, but the nucleus remains the same. We're playing the same way we always have."

Cesc Fabregas and Fernando Torres have shared the most of the responsibility for Spain's attack. David Silva has looked fatigue and there is speculation he could make way for Pedro Rodriguez, who has been impressive in his two appearances off the bench.

Italy coach Cesare Prandelli has meanwhile promised to maintain Italy's current style, which has not only helped it to the final but has come as a surprise compared to its normally defensive ways.

"A team that has (Andrea) Pirlo, (Claudio) Marchisio and (Riccardo) Montolivo is a team that wants to play football, there's no doubt," Del Bosque said. "It's an open final because we've both followed parallel styles to get here. Our styles of play have been very similar, I don't see much of a difference."

Italy has played with a certain flair normally attributed to Spain, which is vying to win a third straight major title. Spain and Italy played to a 1-1 draw in their Group C opener, when Italy was one of the few teams not to sit back and to strike on the counterattack.

"We have to wait until tomorrow to see what the Italy coach does," Spain playmaker Xavi Hernandez said. "Italian football isn't what it was two years ago, now they want the ball. They've got a great team and they know how to compete."

All the ingredients are there for a memorable final.

"Italy has changed, they've got better as the tournament went on and they deserve to be in the final," Del Bosque said. "We can't think we'll face a defensive Italy because they have never showed that here. They come (into the final) playing a certain way and I imagine they will maintain it for this last game against us."

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)

A Kansas man at the center of a large-scale marijuana case allegedly supplied the drug to multiple players from the 2010-11 Kansas men's basketball team, a federal prosecutor said.

The Kansas City Star reported Friday (http://bit.ly/OKVO4p) that an assistant U.S. attorney made the claim during a June 18 detention hearing for Samuel Villeareal III.

The 32-year-old from Overland Park was among numerous defendants charged June 11 with a scheme to distribute more than 2,000 pounds of marijuana in Johnson and Douglas counties. His attorney, Jonathan A. Bortnick, said he had no comment.

A court transcript obtained by The Star shows the prosecutor, Terra Moorhead, claimed during the hearing that Villeareal supplied pot to multiple members of the Jayhawks' squad.

Jim Cross, spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office, said in an email to the AP that he could confirm that the federal prosecutor stated during a hearing ''that the defendant sold marijuana to members of the KU basketball team from the 2010 and 2011 season.'' Cross said he couldn't provide additional information and that Moorhead would be unavailable for comment.

The AP's attempts to reach Kansas coach Bill Self and associate athletic director Jim Marchioney were unsuccessful. Two players from the team contacted by The Star said they'd never heard of Villeareal, while two others refused to comment.

Morehead told a federal magistrate that prosecutors know who Villeareal was selling to because of text messages obtained from an iPhone seized from his home and from surveillance that was done throughout this investigation, The Star reported.

Morehead said the phone ''became kind of a key component to this entire investigation.''

She also described what agents watching Villeareal observed.

''At one occasion law enforcement had Mr. Villeareal this basketball season at the Sprint Center sitting behind the KU basketball bench with a number of the players,'' she said. ''So we know that he had probably not only a personal relationship with them but a professional relationship as well.''

The 44-page complaint and supporting affidavit contain no information about Villeareal's alleged connection to basketball players. Instead, the documents outline the extensive investigation that began in 2008 and included the use of court-approved interceptions of cell phone conversations between the alleged conspirators.

The detention hearing concluded with Judge James O'Hara ruling that Villeareal could be released on bond but would have to reside at a halfway house until trial. Villeareal also was ordered to have no contact with any witnesses or co-defendants, including any of his alleged marijuana customers.

Morehead said: ''He obviously knows who those are, and so do we because we have a cell phone and have all of that documentation. And again, we will be monitoring that.''

The University of Kansas' internal drug-testing policy requires all freshman or new transfer student athletes to take a drug test ''within a reasonable amount of time'' after arriving on campus. All teams that qualify for post-season play also may be subject to testing.

The university also conducts unannounced, random testing during the year, according to the policy. Athletes who test positive are required to undergo counseling and are subjected to more frequent testing. The policy does not call for suspension from game competition until after a third positive test.

Supreme Court's healthcare ruling: The outlook for California

Amid the cheering in many quarters over the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the federal healthcare law, a sobering fact remains: California's ailing healthcare system won't be easy to fix.

Millions of Californians will still lack insurance even after a massive coverage expansion. Medical costs and premiums are expected to keep rising, at least in the short run. And many of those who do gain coverage could have a tough time finding a doctor to treat them.

"The implementation challenges are huge and the expectations for cost control are unrealistic," said Arthur Kellermann, a physician and director of Rand Health, a nonprofit research group in Santa Monica. "I'm an ER doctor and I've been reading about the promise of lowering costs by keeping people out of the emergency room for 20 years, and it hasn't happened yet."

The court ruling does provide enormous benefits to a state where 7 million residents are uninsured. Starting in 2014, California will receive as much as $15 billion a year to expand Medi-Cal coverage for the poor and to provide federal subsidies to people buying policies in a state-run exchange. About 4 million Californians are expected to gain coverage.

Consumers will be guaranteed health coverage regardless of preexisting medical conditions, and insurance companies are required to spend at least 80% of premiums on medical care for individuals and small businesses.

California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones said covering even a portion of the state's uninsured should sharply reduce the amount of uncompensated medical care that's driving up the price of health insurance.

On average, California families pay an extra $1,400 each in annual premiums to cover medical bills for the uninsured, according to the California Endowment.

"That cost shift is one of the big drivers of cost in the system," Jones said.

Consumers and employers would welcome any relief. The average premium for employer coverage in California has increased 154% over the last decade, more than five times the 29% increase in the state's overall inflation rate.

Experts say premiums could rise further as the federal mandate increases demand for health coverage in a market dominated by a small group of insurers.

"Employers are worried the law doesn't go far enough to reduce the long-term cost trends," said David Lansky, chief executive of Pacific Business Group on Health. "There is still a lot of work to do."

There are other provisions in the Affordable Care Act designed to encourage more coordinated patient care and take away incentives for hospitals and doctors to provide unnecessary treatments.

Many California physician practices and hospitals are at the forefront of those experiments. But it's too early to tell whether any of those ideas will work on a larger scale, experts say.

"In theory, there are some things in the law that will reduce costs," said Paul Keckley, executive director of the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions, a research arm of the accounting firm. "However, actually capturing those savings may be elusive."

California is ahead of other states in establishing an online exchange where consumers and small businesses will be able to comparison shop for a health plan.

This week, the California Health Benefit Exchange requested $196 million from the federal government to help build its enrollment system.

Next month it will begin discussing requirements for health plans that want to be sold through the online marketplace.

The exchange plans to start enrollment in October 2013 for policies that take effect in January 2014.

More than 2 million Californians are expected to buy policies with federal subsidies earmarked for families earning about $92,000 or less annually. A family of four in California earning $70,275 would have to pay about $556 a month for subsidized coverage, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

An additional 2 million Californians would be covered through an expansion of Medi-Cal, the joint state-federal program for the poor and disabled.
