NATO says found Afghan children dead after air strike (Reuters)

KABUL (Reuters) ? NATO-led forces in Afghanistan said on Monday they found the bodies of dead children after a coalition air strike that has enraged the Afghan government, and said their deaths may have been linked to an anti-insurgent operation in the area.

The air strike took place last Wednesday near the village of Giawa, in eastern Kapisa province, and followed similar bombings that have stoked tension between the government and NATO over a civilian death toll that has risen annually for five years.

NATO aircraft and ground forces attacked insurgents on open ground in the Najrab district of Kapisa, said Brigadier General Carsten Jacobson, a spokesman for NATO's 130,000-strong International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

"Following the engagement additional casualties were discovered and these casualties were young Afghans of varying ages," Jacobson told reporters.

"At this point in our assessment we can neither confirm nor deny, with reasonable assurance, a direct link to the engagement. Nonetheless, any death of innocents not associated with armed conflict is a tragedy," he said.

Afghan government officials showed gruesome photographs of eight dead boys, and said seven of them had been aged between six and 14, while one had been around 18 years old. They were bombed twice while herding sheep in heavy snow and lighting a fire to keep warm, they said.

"Where were the rights for these children who have been violated? Did they have rights or not? Did they have rights to live as part of the world community?" said Mohammad Tahir Safi, a member of parliament sent by President Hamid Karzai to investigate the air strike.

French soldiers in the area were denied permission to call in air support for an attack north of an area called Ahmad Bik hill, Safi said, citing Afghan security officials in Kapisa, northeast of Kabul.

Despite that, the air strike was launched, Safi said.

Jacobson said the anti-insurgent operation had been carried out according to NATO rules on air strikes, which have been tightened and reviewed under pressure from Karzai and the government.

Karzai's popularity is damaged by civilian deaths and he has repeatedly urged NATO forces to stop killing villagers.

The Afghan government said the Kapisa attack, and a recent air strike in the eastern province of Kunar that killed seven civilians, had people in both provinces demanding curbs on NATO operations ahead of the planned departure of foreign combat troops by the end of 2014.

CIVILIAN DEATHS RISE AGAIN

The United Nations said this month the number of civilians killed and wounded in the Afghan war had risen for the fifth year in a row, from 2,790 civilian deaths in 2010 to 3,021 in 2011.

Most deaths were caused by insurgents, the United Nations said, but civilian deaths due to NATO air strikes also rose nine percent to 187. Air strikes were the main reason behind civilian deaths caused by NATO.

Separately, two 10-year-old would-be suicide bombers were captured on Sunday in Kandahar province in the south, just months after being pardoned by Karzai, provincial spokesman Zalmai Ayubi said.

The boys, pardoned with 18 others last August, had been carrying suicide bomb vests when they were arrested with three other militants planning an attack on Afghan and NATO forces, Ayubi said.

Officials told Afghanistan's Tolo TV that the pair had gone to Pakistan after their release, but were sent back to Afghanistan by insurgents taking sanctuary there after being re-trained and told that U.S. troops "will not be able to hit you."

Afghanistan's government has been battling to stop the recruitment of child soldiers by the insurgents as the war drags into an eleventh year. Billboards in the capital, Kabul, encourage families to avoid involvement in conflict.

WR Ward willing to restructure deal with Steelers (AP)

PITTSBURGH ? Steelers' wide receiver Hines Ward wants to retire with the Pittsburgh Steelers, offering to restructure his contract to do it.

Ward posted on his Facebook page Saturday that he's already told the Steelers he's willing to work with them on altering his deal so he can remain with the team. Ward's comments came after NFL.com reported the Steelers are planning to cut the franchise's all-time leading receiver.

"I don't normally like to respond to rumors, but as I've said all along, I want to finish my career with the Pittsburgh Steelers," Ward posted.

The 14-year veteran is scheduled to make $4 million in 2012. He's coming off a season in which he finished with 46 receptions for 381 yards and two touchdowns, the lowest totals in each category since he was a rookie in 1998.

Ward, who turns 36 next month, became the eighth player in league history to reach 1,000 career receptions in the regular-season finale against Cleveland. He and Jerry Rice are the only players in league history to reach 1,000 receptions and win multiple Super Bowls.

Yet Ward's role within the offense diminished as Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders passed him on the depth chart and Mike Wallace became a Pro Bowler. Ward pushed aside speculation he would retire after the Steelers' season ended with a 29-23 overtime loss to Denver in the wild card round.

"No, I'm not even thinking about that," Ward said at the time.

The 2006 Super Bowl MVP did not catch a pass against the Broncos, the first time in Ward's career he was held without a reception in a postseason game. His future is one of several questions that will need to be addressed during what's already been an active offseason for one of the league's most stable franchises.

Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians was not offered a new contract and spent just over a week unemployed before taking the same position with the Indianapolis Colts. The Steelers hired former Kansas City head coach Todd Haley to replace Arians, though Haley didn't mention Ward's name at all during an introductory press conference on Thursday.

The Steelers will look for receiver depth after releasing veteran Arnaz Battle this week and the possible departure of Jerricho Cotchery, who will be an unrestricted free agent. Pittsburgh has just four receivers under contract for 2012, including Ward.

Wallace, Brown and Sanders have spoken at length about Ward's leadership and all want his No. 86 to be on the field next season.

"He sets the tone in the room," Brown said of Ward. "We definitely want to help a guy like him win."

Kourtney Kardashian: Pregnant! Abandoned!

Poor Kourtney Kardashian. The knocked up reality star has once again been left by baby daddy Scott Disick, according to Life & Style at least.

In December, we were told that Kourtney was left Pregnant & Alone by Disick, despite a multitude of red carpet appearances that proved otherwise. Now, a new tabloid cover story is screaming that Scott is again acting like a total jerk.

Pregnant and Abandoned!!!

In late January, sources tells the magazine, Disick spent a weekend partying in Las Vegas. He then returned home to a "fuming" Kourtney, the insider continues, who responded to his bachelor-like ways by throwing him out of the house. The result?

Scott spent 11 days in a different state than his baby mama last month! 11!!!

Disick even has his own place on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, an apartment he allegedly escapes to any time he and Kourtney fight.

Another mole, meanwhile, refers to Kardashian as "depressed and not happy," adding that the couple is "not affectionate" and here's proof:

"I don't think they've had sex since Kourtney got pregnant - and that was four months ago!"

NVIDIA's Mobile World Congress press invite points to quad-core phones

NVIDIA at Mobile World Congress

That NVIDIA is bringing quad-core smartphones to Mobile World Congress should surprise exactly no one. We saw the first quad-core tablet prototype a year ago, and in August NVIDIA told us we'd see phones in early 2012. And we're closing in on Mobile World Congress, just a few short weeks away. And there's a smartphone pictured in this invite. So, yeah. They're coming.

Android Central at Mobile World Congress We try not to read too much into these press invites, we really do. Who knows what agency made them. But we can't help but notice what looks like an HTC Incredible S (aka the Droid Incredible 2 on Verizon) in dude's hands there. (We've blown it up for posterity; note the plateaued battery cover and usual HTC positioning of the camera and flash.)

Now, what you see in this invite certainly looks different than the HTC Edge -- long rumored to be one of the first quad-core phones, never mind one of the first from HTC to use an NVIDIA system-on-a-chip -- render that leaked in November 2011. But stranger things have happened.

Will we indeed bear witness to the marriage of HTC and NVIDIA in Barcelona, Spain? Stay tuned, folks, and keep your eyes glued to our Mobile World Congress page for all the latest.

Regular Vitamin And Mineral Supplementation Lowers Colon ...

Home / Health / Regular Vitamin And Mineral Supplementation Lowers Colon Cancer Risk More Than Eighty Percent

February 8, 2012

Natural News

By John Phillip

?Remember to take those vitamins. But not Centrum. Be smart.? ?KTRN

Researchers publishing in the Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology (CJPP) have found that a diet enhanced with vitamin and mineral supplementation can lower the risk of developing precancerous colon cancer lesions by up to 84%. Colon cancer is the second most common form of the disease affecting men and women in the US, with nearly 150,000 new diagnoses each year.

Nutrition experts and alternative practitioners understand that cancer is largely a disease caused by poor lifestyle behaviors including a diet lacking an optimal intake of vitamins and minerals. Chronic illnesses including colon cancer are the result of many years and decades of low nutritional status, as support for a healthy immune response is suppressed. Scientists now provide compelling evidence in support of whole-food based vitamin and mineral supplementation to dramatically lower the risk of colorectal cancer.

Vitamin and Mineral Supplements Help Significantly Lower Colorectal Cancer Risk
The study authors used rats that were fed a high fat diet (20% fat intake) for a period of 32 weeks. Rats are commonly used for this type of research because they develop colon cancer polyps and tumors in a manner parallel to humans. The rats were divided into six groups and were subsequently exposed to different combinations of carcinogens and nutritional supplements.

The researchers found that the animals fed a high-fat, low fiber diet and exposed to a carcinogen developed pre-cancerous lesions of the colon along a pathway similar to that found in humans. The group of animals that underwent a similar treatment and diet, but were supplemented with a daily vitamin and mineral supplement showed an 84% reduction in the formation of pre-cancerous lesions and did not develop tumors.
